Offering dog farewells and memorials

Along with the joy of hosting dogs comes the sad reality of those dogs passing. Some guests may book farewell visits for dogs, and some hosts may offer memorial spaces for dogs. This article provides ideas for both.

Booking a visit to a favorite Sniffspot - or maybe even booking a first visit to a Sniffspot - is one way guests may arrange for their dog to have a special day as they make end-of-life arrangements. Some guests may refer to this as a Rainbow Bridge farewell. They may want to include family members, and some guests may even wish to take photographs to remember the day. Some guests have asked permission to have their dog euthanized on site after happy final moments.

Placing a memorial at a favorite Sniffspot - or at a nearby Sniffspot that offers the option - is another way guests may choose to honor their dog after its passing. Some hosts offer memorial gardens, memory chapels, rainbow benches, or actual rainbow bridges. Some spots allow guests to write the name of their dog on a memorial; to leave a tag, collar, or other token behind; to bury or spread remains; or to purchase memorials.

As a host, you may wish to have a plan in place to accommodate requests for dog farewells and/or memorials with a few details:

  1. Consider preparing a memorial space and how to integrate guests into that space in a way that works for your spot.
  2. Consider making exceptions to limitations on the use of your space that may exist for typical bookings.
  3. Decide whether you want to offer Extras to highlight your options publicly or if you will make arrangements individually upon request.
