Taxes
Payments made to US hosts are subject to reporting criteria for IRS Form 1099-K. Learn more about Form 1099-K here. We will determine if a 1099-K is required for each host based on current IRS rules and contact hosts who meet requirements for any missing tax information. Your response to any inquiries can ensure timely filing and help to avoid any penalties.
W-9 Requests
Our tax firm will request missing tax information by issuing Form W-9 Requests through a secure platform. Most Sniffspot hosts complete form W-9 as individual/sole proprietor. To determine the correct federal tax classification for your circumstances, we recommend reviewing the instructions for IRS Form W-9 found here or checking with your tax professional.
Gross Receipts
It is important to note that IRS Form 1099-K does not report net earnings. Instead, it includes gross receipts from completed reservations - including Sniffspot Fees, Payment Processing Fees, and some refunds - and are based on the date of payout for each reservation. This gross amount is higher than the net earnings you received in your bank account.
Net Earnings
Hosts should only report and pay taxes on net earnings. You should continue keep records to support amounts reported on your tax return. These details should help:
- Hosts who meet requirements to receive a 1099-K will also receive documentation of the fees and any refunds included in reported gross receipts to support claiming those deductions.
- All US hosts can reference this publication for current information about self-employment tax laws, including small-business deductions and expenses.
- Net earnings from completed reservations - less fees and refunds - are paid to hosts monthly. To find your payouts history, click here. On web, click your profile photo > My earnings > Payouts history. On mobile, click settings > My earnings > Payouts history.
- Since we pay hosts the month after bookings occur, reportable earnings for 2025 include payouts made from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2025 for bookings that took place from December 1, 2024 through November 30, 2025.
